Celebrating Excellence in Education: André Cholmsky
Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence
Congratulations to André Cholmsky, a distinguished teacher at Villa Maria High School, on receiving the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. This prestigious national award, given to just two teachers in Québec, is the highest honour for educators in Canada, recognizing those whose exceptional dedication and innovative spirit have been a source of inspiration to their students. As a 2024 recipient, André was invited to travel to Ottawa to celebrate this remarkable achievement in the presence of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
BRINGING SCIENCE TO LIFE
André Cholmsky has the extraordinary ability to bring science and mathematics to life for his students. He views these subjects as tools for understanding and transforming the world. André’s journey began with a Bachelor’s in Engineering from McGill University in 1987. Recognizing the critical role that educational high school experiences play in shaping future engineers and scientists, he returned to McGill to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Since joining Villa Maria in 1998, André has been the linchpin of the Science Department, inspiring countless students with his innovative teaching methods.
“Receiving this award is a true honour. The students’ commitment is what leads to their success, and I do everything I can to help them. For me, everything that happens from the time a student enters the school to the time he leaves should be treated as a pedagogical activity. It is so gratifying for me to see that innovative and different approaches are recognized by this award for their true value,” explains André Cholmsky.
INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY
André’s teaching methods are as effective as they are unique. He combines his in-depth knowledge of science with a novel and adventurous approach to education. He integrates all learning styles into his pedagogy, uses humour to make complex topics accessible, and maintains high expectations to encourage student growth. André’s students eagerly anticipate his classes, with one saying: “In Secondary 2, you look forward to having him!” As another student simply put it: “Yeah, he’s a legend.”
HOLISTIC EDUCATION
André believes in the holistic development of his students, ensuring they are well-rounded individuals. He has introduced numerous projects that combine real-world problems and issues with hands-on learning. The Techno-Farm project, for instance, teaches students about sustainable urban agriculture and climate change through practical tasks. His efforts have had a lasting impact, with students affirming that his teaching has given them a strong foundation for their future studies and careers.
TECHNOLOGICAL INTEGRATION
André has been instrumental in incorporating technology into the classroom, boosting student confidence and preparedness for the workforce. In 2016, he spearheaded the use of lab sensors and labware applications for data analysis. He also introduced platforms like Explore Learning’s GIZMOS and PhET Interactive Simulations, enhancing scientific literacy through technology.
His Techno-Farm initiative blends technology with real-life applications, involving students in projects like soil analysis, hydroponics, and electronic sensors.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Beyond the classroom, André has fostered a sense of global citizenship and community involvement. A number of years ago, he coordinated the Eco-Fashion Show to raise awareness of sustainable fashion and introduced robotics and coding programs at Villa Maria. His commitment extends to environmental sustainability through his role in the Lab22 committee, promoting projects like a vermicomposting system integrated into the high-school curriculum.
“Villa Maria’s entire team is delighted that André’s work and commitment to students have been recognized. From the time he first arrived at Villa Maria in 1998, André has been the cornerstone of the science and mathematics departments, inspiring countless students with his innovative teaching methods. He deserves all the recognition he received today and we are quite fortunate to have him on our teaching staff,” notes Marie Anna Bacchi, Director General of Villa Maria High School.
A LEADER AND A CHANGEMAKER
André Cholmsky’s dedication, innovative spirit, and passion for teaching have made him an exceptional educator and a deserving recipient of Canada’s highest teaching honour. His ability to make science engaging and accessible, combined with his commitment to student success and community involvement, exemplifies the qualities of a truly inspirational teacher.
Villa Maria is incredibly proud of André Cholmsky, whose impact on his students and the broader educational community is profound and enduring. Congratulations, André, on this well-deserved recognition!
