Covid-19
Here are questions and answers that you may find helpful given the current pandemic. It should be noted that the information below may change over time as public health authorities and the Ministry of Education issue new guidelines.
Let’s act responsibly to prevent the spread of the virus. This is a battle we must wage together in order to ensure the health and safety of our fellow citizens.

general information — covid-19
We are well aware that both students and parents may experience a degree of anxiety and concern over the current situation. We have made it our goal to minimize these feelings by remaining flexible, staying attuned to developments, and keeping the lines of communication open with our community of parents.
It should be noted that, as a school, we are required to comply with clear guidelines in order to ensure the safety of both students and staff. To this end, we rigorously comply with recommendations issued by public health authorities, which are responsible for steering educational establishments through this process. We must therefore defer entirely to their decisions, which can often change quickly. For this reason, we are asking for your understanding.
Moreover, in an effort to further increase the level of safety in our school, wherever possible, we have gone beyond the “minimum” requirements, adopting additional precautionary and safety measures. In addition, we have worked and collaborated with our teachers and employees as well as our colleagues in the private and public sectors to gather as much information, data and ideas as possible, so as to identify any additional measures and protocols we could implement for the benefit and safety of our students.
In the event of a school closing, the students’ class schedule will be maintained, and Distance Learning will be provided in a synchronized manner. This will enable students to access all of their scheduled courses remotely.
A support and monitoring system has been developed and implemented for students who need it. Our team of professionals, as well as the Assistant Director of Educational Services, take whatever measures are required to ensure this support on a daily basis.
All our students must be in class by 8:00 a.m., as the first period starts at 8:05 a.m.
The decision to close the school rests with the public health authorities. Villa Maria will cooperate fully with public health authorities.

In the last 5 minutes of the final period of the day, students and teachers are required to disinfect their desk and chair.
In addition, Villa Maria’s maintenance team carries out its disinfection plan as follows:
Twice a day:
- Restrooms
- Doors, frames and handles
- Handrails
- Light switches
- Garbage pick-up
- Hand sanitizers
Once a day:
- Window opening mechanisms
- Filling cleaning kits in classrooms, offices and common areas
Once a week:
- Disinfecting floors
Floors are also washed daily.
Should public health authorities mandate school closings, Villa Maria’s teachers, professionals and administrators have the equipment and tools needed to provide all students with Distance Learning in keeping with their class schedule.
Lifestyle
The French sector has about 1 050 students and the English sector has more than 900 students.
Each class has an average of 34 students.
At Villa Maria, our students and their family come from more than 70 countries and speak more than 30 languages. This cultural mosaic enriches our school and is highly stimulating for our students.
At Villa Maria, we support students as they transition to our school. As students grow more accustomed to the school, we strongly encourage them to get involved in school life (sports, activities, co-curricular activities) to continue meeting new friends. Our teaching team also meets several times at the beginning of the year to determine whether students require additional support or assistance.
Your first contact is the assistant director. He or she will act as the link between your child and your child’s teachers. Once the problem is identified, the assistant director may recommend talking with other resource people such as the guidance counsellor or the director of educational services.
You must contact your child’s assistant director to explain the reasons for the trip. An absence for a non-urgent personal trip is not motivated.
You must call the supervisors office or notify us through the portal.

private high school education
- Generally, students perform better academically. We closely monitor success rates and entrance to CEGEPs. We draw on this data to make sure we provide proper teaching and support for students and teachers. As a result, we continue to achieve high success rates.
- Private schools place special emphasis on values. Our beliefs, which are transmitted to our students and faculty, are shared with the families who choose our school. They believe, as we do, that education is paramount in the life of a child.
- In the private sector, expectations for behaviour and academic success are generally higher than in the public sector. We provide students with the opportunity and tools they need to really concentrate on learning without being distracted.
- Students are often invited to participate in culturally enriching activities and various sports. And since Villa Maria has an English Sector and a French Sector, a lot of those activities take place in a bilingual setting. Not only do students gain exposure to both official languages, but they get to build new friendships along the way. That’s what we mean when we talk about our unique bilingual environment.
- We strive to provide facilities and equipment that exceed the expectations of young people and allow them to explore all the avenues they are interested in.
- Private schools are on the cutting edge of education. By incorporating new education technologies, we help lead the way in pioneering new teaching methods.

In Quebec, private schools that receive Ministry funding are required to hire teachers who meet provincial educational requirements. In addition, at Villa Maria, our teachers must complete 10 hours of professional training per year.
In Quebec, education works on a two-tier system. There are private schools funded by the government, and other private schools that are not.
